Cochin – Rest Day

At the bottom of our communication board is a look at our final days of the ride. Only 3 days of riding and one boat ride through the backwaters in this lovely state called Kerala.

Spit happens! It happens all over India, but they must’ve had a greater problem with it here at the ticket booth where we stood in line to buy our ferry tickets. “Don’t Spit Here” is posted on the ticket window AND the glass door in the background as well as every glass door and window in the terminal. J

We boarded the ferry and crossed the harbor to where Fort Kochi and the other historic buildings and churches are located. The ferry we crossed on is a passenger ferry… no cars allowed. J

Boats of all sizes maneuver through the water here - from canoe styles to fishing boats to ocean liners. Like Mumbai, this is one of the main ports on the West coast of India.

We deviated from our plan for sightseeing and walked the streets lined with shops and restaurants, finding coffee and air conditioning the most pleasant combination to begin our Kochi experience. Jewelry shops are a favorite for Jan and there are so many with very unique and beautiful treasures. It’s fun exploring the shops – I especially enjoyed one particular antique shop as I pondered the history behind several of the pieces that caught my eye.

Accompanied by Mika and Annagretta, Jan and I had lunch at a very nice hotel restaurant. The food was delicious – I ordered ravioli (without chilies) and it was the best EVER (but then I have been deprived of pasta lately)!!! J
